Amigurumi Snowman Ornament

Amigurumi Snowman Ornament

I  have a new crochet pattern to share!  This little ornament is the mini version of my regular sized Amigurumi Snowman with 3 snowballs, a carrot nose, a hat and scarf.  It includes 3 small “coal” buttons and 2 eyes as well as a simple yarn loop to allow for hanging around the house or on a tree branch.

Yarn Used: Red Heart Brand (It’s inexpensive and works up well for these sorts of projects)

  • White: “Snow” parts (entire 3-ball body, worked as one piece), 1/3rd of scarf, hanging loop
  • Orange: “Carrot” nose
  • Dark Green: Main part of top hat, 1/3rd of scarf
  • Light Green: Accent bit of top hat, 1/3rd of scarf

Other tools/accessories you’ll need:

  • Black Buttons (5 very small)
  • Stuffing
  • Thread (to sew on the buttons)
  • Needle (to sew on the buttons)
  • Yarn needled (to “weave” in the ends of the yarn and attach the hat and loop)
  • Crochet Needle (I used size “I”/5.5mm)
The beginnings

The beginnings

Body

(Starts at base of snowman; we are building from the bottom up)

White Yarn (Making the bottom snowball):

Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 4 sc
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 8 sc
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around – 12 sc
Rnds 4-6:  Sc in each sc around
Rnd 7: *Sc2tog, sc in next sc, rep from * around – 8 sc

Do not finish off or cut yarn. Sew on button if you wish and stuff the first ball but leave enough room to work around your next round; you will be able to add more stuffing later.

The Middle

The Middle

Continue for the middle snowball:

Rnd 8:  Sc in each sc around
Rnd 9: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around – 12 sc
Rnds 10-12:  Sc in each sc around
Rnd 13: *Sc2tog, sc in next sc, rep from * around – 8 sc

Do not finish off or cut yarn. Sew on another button if you wish and add a bit more stuffing, but leave enough room to work around your next round; you will be able to add more stuffing later.

The End (of the body)

The End (of the body)

Finish off the top snowball:

Rnd 14:  Sc in each sc around
Rnd 15: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around – 12 sc
Rnds 16-18:  Sc in each sc around
~~This is a good point to add the rest of your “coal” buttons, the carrot nose and the eyes.  See “Assembly” below for tips on this~~
Rnd 19: *Sc2tog, sc in next sc, rep from * around – 8 sc

Rnd 19: *Sc2tog, sc in next sc, rep from * around – 4 sc
Finish Off, weave ends around to close up the hole at the top of the head but don’t worry over much if a bit of space shows, the top hat will cover it!

Orange Yarn

Finish Off, leaving a second bit of tail

Scarf

Dark Green, Light Green, White Yarn

The braided scarf

The braided scarf

Cut a length of each of the 3 colors of yarn.  It should be long enough to loop around the snowman’s neck twice and reach the body of the body.  Don’t worry if you cut it a bit too long; you can always trim the ends.

Leaving a bit of tail, tie all three strands into a knot.

Get someone to hold that end or else secure it under a heavy book.

Braid the 3 yarn strands together until you’ve almost reached the end.

Leaving another bit of a tail, knot the end of the braid.

Trim the ends so that they all match.

Dark Green Yarn

We’re starting at the top of the hat and working towards the brim.

Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 4 sc
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 8 sc
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around – 12 sc
Rnd 4-6: Sc in each sc around

Switch to Light Green Yarn

Rnd 7-8: Sc in each sc around

Switch back to Dark Green Yarn

Rnd 9-10: Sc in each sc around
Rnd 11: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 24 sc
Finish off, leaving a long tail so you can attach the hat to the head

Assembly

Use the sewing needle and black thread to attach the buttons to the body for the eyes and “coal buttons”. Try to sew very close to the edge of the button to reduce the amount of black thread visible on top of the white yarn. These are easier to do along the way, before you finish the snowman and stuff him!

The nose is attached by pulling the two bits of “tails” you left through two spots on the face, centering the nose between them.  When it looks good to you, tie the tails inside the head of the snowman tightly and then finish stuffing the head.

Use the tail of yarn you left after finishing off your top hat to attach it to the head, weaving the yarn around the base of the hat (at the bottom of the rows of accent color).  This leaves the rim free to flop around nicely.

Tie the scarf tightly around the space between the top and middle snowballs.  If the ends are a bit long, trim them.

For the hanging loop, cut a length of white yarn long enough to loop over a tree branch (or whatever object you plan to hang it from).

Tie the two ends together so you have a circle.

Use your crochet needle to attach the loop to the back of the snowman’s head.

Enjoy your new winter-time ornament.  Maybe make it a larger friend too!
