Amigurumi Snowman

I’ve been having a lot of winter fun crafting little crochet critters and had another round creature to share.  This time it is a 3 snowball high snowman (or woman or whatever, depending how you wish to decorate it!) with a hat and scarf.  The pattern follows.  Hope you enjoy and Happy New Year!!

**ETA: Updated Rnd 44 and offer alternatives for nose***

Three Snowball Snowman with Hat & Scarf

Crochet Snowman Toy

Ready for a snowy day

This pattern creates the 3 snowball high creation seen here with hat, scarf, carrot nose and button eyes.

Recommended Yarn:

White (Body & Scarf Accent)
Black (Top Hat)
Orange (Nose)
Red (Scarf & Hat Band)

Other needed bits:
Black Buttons (2 medium, 3 small)
Stuffing
Thread
Craft Needle

Body (Starts at base of snowman; we are building from the bottom up)

White Yarn:
Making the bottom snowball:
Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 6 sc
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around – 18 sc.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnd 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, rep from * around – 36 sts.
Rnds 7 -14: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 15: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 4 sts, rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnd 16: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 17: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 18 sts.
Rnd 18: Sc in each sc around.
Do not finish off or cut yarn. Sew on button if you wish and stuff the first ball but leave enough room to work around your next round; you will be able to add more stuffing later.

Making the middle snowball:
Rnd 19: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 20: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnd 21: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, rep from * around – 36 sts.
Rnds 22 -28: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 29: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 4 sts, rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnd 30: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 31: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 18 sts.
Rnd 32: Sc in each sc around.
Again, do not finish off or cut yarn. Sew on buttons if you wish and stuff the middle ball but leave enough room to work around your next round; you will be able to add more stuffing later.

Making the top snowball (the head):
Rnd 33: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 34: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnds 35 -41: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 42: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 43: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 18 sts.
At this point sew on the eyes and then finish stuffing the entire body, making sure you like the amount of stuffing in the whole body.
Rnd 44: *Sc2tog, sc in next st*, rep from * around – 12 sc.
Rnd 45: Sc2tog around – 6 sc.
Rnd 46: Sc2tog around – 3 sc.
Finish off. Weave tail of yarn around to close up any remaining gap at the top.

Rnds 7 -11: Sc in each sc around.
Switch to Red Yarn
Red Yarn (This is making the hat band):

Rnds 12-13: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 15: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, rep from * around – 42 sts.
Rnd 16: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts, rep from * around – 48 sts.
Fasten off.

Nose (Is worked directly on the snowman’s face)

Orange Yarn:
Select placement of nose on face and find a “hole” to use as your center.
Rnd 1: Using your chosen center “hole”, stitch 6 sc around – 6
Rnd 2-3: Sc in each sc around (Or depending on yarn thickness can increase or decrease total rows here)
Rnd 4: Sc2tog – 3
Finish off and weave tail through carrot nose.

Alternately: create nose separately to sew onto face.  Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring then follow the rest of the directions above.

Red Yarn:

Row 3 – Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Create 6 lengths of yarn in both red and white and use for the tassels in bundles of one white/one red yarn each.

Putting it all together

Stuff the hat until it looks the way you want it to.
Place hat on head so that the brim flares out.
Sew in place onto head around at the base of the hat part, leaving the brim free to flare up and out.
Tie scarf around the neck. Sew in place if desired or leave as it is.

  1. This is so cute!

I found a knitting pattern for a similar snowman (I like the hat on yours better, though). But I had to put it away in my ‘Someday, my toddler won’t ‘help Mommy’ by bringing me my project in one hand and the needles in another” folder . . .

    Ah, someday! 🙂
